Alcohol Testing - Advice from Addiction Specialists
Addiction specialists suggest that no single test for alcohol use should be considered definitive. We offer three separate tests to help ascertain whether an individual has used alcohol excessively, and strongly recommend that a combination of all three alcohol tests is used to provide the strongest corroborative evidence of whether an individual’s alcohol use may be excessive.
- A TrichoTest® hair analysis for alcohol
- Liver Function Test (LFT)
- Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin Test (CDT)
In order to provide the best assessment of potential excessive alcohol use, it may also be appropriate to obtain a clinical assessment of an individual’s alcohol use from a qualified consultant psychiatrist, experienced in substance misuse.
Tests detecting alcohol use should not be used to try to highlight binge drinking. It is not scientifically possible to detect the amount of alcoholic units consumed due to the varying strength of different alcohol beverages, and the variance in the way each individual’s body deals with alcohol.
