Alcohol Testing in Blood

We offer two alcohol tests in blood, a Liver Function test (LFT) and a Carbohydrate-Deficient Transferrin (CDT) test. The analysis for both of these blood tests is conducted at The Doctors Laboratory, with whom we work in partnership.

Liver Function Testing
A Liver Function Test is a blood test, which acts like a snapshot of a person’s liver at the time the sample is taken. This test can provide a suggestion of liver damage, and can give an indication of excessive daily alcohol use or continual alcohol consumption over a 4-8 week period. 60g of alcohol is classed as excessive.

Carbohydrate-Deficient Transferrin Testing
A Carbohydrate-Deficient Transferrin test is a blood test which looks at the carbohydrate levels of the blood. Raised levels of CHO suggest excessive alcohol consumption daily over a period of 1-2 week approximately. As with the LFT, 60g of alcohol is classed as excessive.

When ordering tests to detect parental alcohol use, please consider the following advice from addiction specialists

Collection of Alcohol Samples
Hair samples for an EtG test can be taken by one of our trained sample collectors, from our team based throughout the UK. A donor can also attend one our of collection centers, in Liverpool or Manchester where blood samples can be taken by a trained phlebotomist in addition to hair sample collection.
