Mephedrone

Drug name: Mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone or dimethylmethcathinone)

Other street names: Bubble, drone, MCAT, meph, 4MMC and ‘Meow Meow’.

Classification/legal status: Mephedrone became controlled as a Class B drug on the 16th April 2010 meaning it is illegal to have, give away or sell.

Mephedrone is a stimulant. The effects have been described as being a cross between MDMA (amphetamine) and cocaine.

Due to its relatively new prevalence, most of what is known about the drug is based on anecdotal reports from users. Some of the risks include over stimulation of the heart and nervous system, increased anxiety and feelings of paranoia and blood circulation problems. Compulsive use can lead to a number of side effects including insomnia and hallucinations. Risks may increase when combined with alcohol consumption.

Doses are generally between 0.5 and 1 gram, with reports of characteristic stimulant-style binge use of up to 10 grams in a session. Mephedrone is sometimes mixed with other cathinones and caffeine.

The results of a Mixmag survey has shown that 33% of its respondents previously bought their supply of mephedrone online before it was banned in 2010,  but since being made illegal 58% said they now buy it from a dealer.

Mephedrone is chemically similar to amphetamine and ecstasy and has similar effects to them both along with cocaine.

Concateno can provide a back to laboratory test for mephedrone in hair, oral fluid and urine samples.
